Topic: Sleep Disordered Breathing Correlates with your Total Body Health so… “Treat the Cause”

This fast paced introduction to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of the physiology, diagnosis, and medical and dental consequences of snoring, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). The pathophysiology of SDB, involving both anatomical and neuromuscular factors, will be explained in an understandable fashion. The increased risk of serious oral health as well as systemic health problems will be tied in to our role as dental professionals. Almost all of the dentistry we do is to restore the oral environment that has been destroyed by SDB. Almost all of the medications we take are to treat symptoms of SDB.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will appreciate the necessity of including airway evaluations into their regular protocols.
  2. They will understand the difference between treating the symptoms and treating the cause of both dental and medical problems.
