Junior Counselor Application

The Youth Program is a three-day program designed for the youth of those attending the Scientific Program. The Youth Program is packed with activities in Seattle and the greater Seattle area and always results in our youth participants creating wonderful memories. This unique program provides enrolled kids with engaging and exciting activities, as well as with the opportunity to build meaningful and lasting relationships with other youth participants. The youth are supervised by Staff members, many of which started as youth participants years ago. In fact, many participants continue to come annually, and each year we are excited to welcome new participants to our Youth Program family! I look forward to seeing all of you for another unforgettable summer in Seattle!

Thursday, July 29: High Trek Adventures

We begin this year’s program with an activity the Youth Program has never done before – a high ropes course! Upon arrival, we will gear up and complete a quick ground lesson before climbing up into the high ropes course where 3 different course levels, boasting over 60 challenges, await. The Youth Program participants will have the option to explore the high ropes course for up to two hours, while ground games and mini golf will be available for those who prefer to spend less time in the air. We will take a quick break for lunch before moving on to Team Building activities – Olympian Style! To honor the 2020 Olympics, participants will be split into teams and will compete in multiple challenges. To finish the day, Youth Participants will test their speed and accuracy in a game of laser tag!

Please bring: Closed-toed shoes, hat/sunglasses and a light jacket/sweatshirt. Sunscreen will be provided.

Friday, July 30: T-Shirt Designing Contest & Wild Waves!

The day will begin with our annual T-Shirt designing contest. Bring your creativity and best drawing ideas for a chance to have your design on one of the 2021 Youth Program T-Shirts. Shortly after, we will head to one of our all-time favorite spots – Wild Waves! 70 acres of fun, with more than 60 rides, roller coasters, water slides, wave pools, carnival games and a “Kid’s Kingdom,” that provides our youth with a busy and exciting afternoon. Wild Waves is always a hit, and after everyone sets up his or her towel on the hill and finds a friend and Staff member, the fun begins! We spend the entire afternoon trying to hit as many rides and slides as possible and take a quick break for lunch and dessert.

Please bring: Bathing suit, sandals, goggles, water wings (if required), hat/sunglasses, shorts and a change of clothes. Towels and sunscreen are provided.

Saturday, July 31: Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

For the final day of the Youth Program, we will travel to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma – another venue never visited by the Youth Program – for a day full of animals and education! With over 29 acres of combined zoo, aquarium and botanical garden, our youth program participants will have the chance to learn about different natural habitats such as the Asian Forest Sanctuary, Arctic Tundra, Pacific Seas Aquarium, Rocky Shores and more! From elephants and monkeys to sharks and stingrays, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium features 367 species for our program participants to visit and learn more about. Participants will have the opportunity to break for lunch with their role call groups at one of the many cafes positioned throughout the zoo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is staffing the program, and how does it work if I have a young child participating?

The Youth Program has been carefully designed to ensure that all youth participants experience an incredible three days and are kept very safe.  Many of the Staff members are previous participants and are very familiar with some of the activities we do, as well as the areas we visit. Each Staff member is paired with a group so the Staff to Youth Participant ratio is approximately 1:5. Groups including younger participants are smaller, which allows Staff members to provide adequate attention to the younger children at all times.

Can kids be signed up for only specific days of the program as opposed to the entire program?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate partial participation in the Youth Program. Transportation and activities are planned around the total number of youth participants, and our Staff members are hired for three full days.

Can an adult sign up to accompany his or her youth on particular days?

We do allow and welcome adults, parents, and guardians to register on a day-by-day basis for the Youth Program if he or she is accompanying a youth member. Please contact Jen directly for adult registration.
